This is the view from the Parking area (which is small and can get filled so look for parking alternatives along Mulholland but READ THE SIGNS so you don't park where you're not supposed to.īe aware that the parking signs vary depending on the side of the road and the EXACT location so if it says "No parking", drive for 20 seconds and you might get lucky. as well as a bird's eye view of the Hollywood Bowl. The Jerome C Daniel Overlook at the eastern end of Mulholland (not far from the 101 ( Hollywood) Freeway) offers a close-up view of the City including a fine view of downtown L.A. With all this mediocre news about southern views from Mulholland, the question becomes: "Is there a decent southern view anywhere along Mulholland?" and the answer is: "Yes, one". If you 'walk' west and turn to the left, the view of Los Angeles looks like this: (again, not all that). Here is a view of the Autry Overlook (ahead, on the left) with the tiny 'turn out' in the foreground on the right:

As it is, the tiny 'turn out' on the north side might be full (it can barely fit 2 small cars). You can try to turn directly into the parking area for the Overlook but the traffic will be parked in the opposite direction so it might be hard to maneuver. You will then need to cross Mulholland on foot (again, use caution) to the Autry Overlook which has a southern view. As you can see, it's a distant view because the canyons below are quite lengthy so the basin doesn't begin for a long while.Ī safer option might be to continue driving west to 10722 Mulholland to a small 'turn out' (patch of shoulder) that is on the north side of the road. Be aware that this small overlook area is on the south side of Mulholland so you'll need to cut across opposing traffic (sometimes easy, sometimes, not) in order to reach it. The first opportunity to see a view to the south is at 10720 Mulholland Drive. Even when the road is at the very top of the ridge, there are nearby hills that obscure the views. Mulholland Drive does not actually run along the ridge line (very top of the hills) most of the time, it's on the 'valley side' of the topī. (to the south of Mulholland) are few and far between along this section of Mulholland for a couple of reasons:Ī. For views of the Valley, I like Nancy Hoover Pohl overlook, not only because of the expansive views but because there is a decent-sized parking lot there (which sometimes does get full so park on the street nearby). to the south are mostly 'keyhole glimpses' through gaps in the nearby hills. The drive between Laurel Canyon Bl & Coldwater Av will give you a nice taste of the view of the San Fernando Valley to the North.
The view doesn't really change significantly as you drive along since the City is so far in the distance below. The road is very narrow and curvy in places (and there are no barriers between the road and the City below). I wouldn't recommend driving a lengthy portion of Mulholland.
Keep in mind that Laurel Canyon Bl is VERY narrow and curvy in places (subject to traffic jams) and there is no view of anything until you reach Mulholland.
